The bonus in benchmarking sustainability

From energy efficiency to water usage and waste management, the environmental impact of our industry is always under scrutiny.

When it comes to sustainability at GPT, we are continually benchmarking our performance against both industry standards and the performance of our competitors. This includes evaluating the environmental footprints of our individual assets, using programs such as the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS), as well as assessing company-wide strengths and weakness in sustainable practice.

Our dedication to sustainability has not gone unnoticed. In September 2014, GPT was again named global real estate leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). This is a position we are proud to have held for four of the last six years.

Split by industry sector, the DJSI awards track the stock performance of the world’s leading companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. They are considered something of a best of the best index, with only the top 10% of the 2,500 largest companies from around the world invited to participate.

The metrics assessed for the awards include:

  • Risk and crisis management
  • Supply chain management
  • Corporate governance
  • Climate strategy
  • Environmental performance
  • Human capital development
  • Health and safety
  • Social integration

Following a rigorous assessment, the DJSI ranks industry participants according to their strengths and weaknesses in each of these areas. This information allows GPT to identify where we are doing well and where we need to do better, compared to our industry peers. By executing a gap analysis, we can compare year-on-year results for our company in each metric area with those of fellow industry leaders, as identified by the DJSI. This process helps to guide GPT in refining and enhancing our practices.

One important point to note is that our DJSI leadership status in 2014/15 is based on data from 2013, actions taken in 2012 and strategies endorsed in 2011. This lead time, in conjunction with also winning the 2014 Banksia Large Business Sustainability Award, demonstrates the GPT commitment to industry leading sustainability practice.

For GPT, the DJSI benchmark is an invaluable source of social feedback from the global investment community, illustrating what is most important in their assessment of a company’s performance. The information derived from such benchmarking allows us to understand trends as well as identify new avenues to improve our practice.
